West of Midland the Centennial Greenway will continue west to Jackson on the north side of Balson Avenue. The Balson Avenue street cross section will require modification to accommodate
the trail. Neighborhood parking needs are particularly high because of schools and the church. Diagonal parking is provided in the center of Balson between Purdue Avenue and Jackson,
and while this maximizes parking volume, it is an inefficient use of street width. It appears that the street width is adequate to develop an alternative approach that will allow for
development of the Centennial Greenway, while preserving one lane of traffic in each direction and most of the parking on one side of the street. Mature shade trees line the north side
of the
street and it is essential to protect and preserve these trees.
The Centennial Greenway will follow the perimeter of the traffic circle, cross Jackson and connect to University City High School and Delmar-Harvard Elementary School. The Centennial
Greenway will head north on Jackson toward the River des Peres and the recently constructed bridge toward Shaftesbury. A new pedestrian bridge over the River des Peres will be necessary
and should be parallel to the recently completed vehicular bridge, leading to the north edge of the river
on University City High School property.
