Session 1836
April 8, 2002

past 29 years. He is truly an wonderful example of a public servant. He will always be
his friend.

Mr. Sharpe said that Mr. Schoomer has been a sterling example for him from his first
day on the Council as a novice. He is sure that the City has lost a marvelous person
that has served well on this Council.

Mr. Lieberman said that many years ago when Mr. Schoomer was chairing the Plan
Commission and Mr. Lieberman happened to be Council liaison to the Plan
Commission, that there were plenty of times that he remembered Mr. Schoomer
berating the Council or him personally for reacting in certain ways. In response, Mr.
Lieberman suggested that if he didn't like it that he should run for City Council. The rest
is history. He has done a real service to the community which he appreciates greatly.

Mr. Ollendorff said that twenty years ago when Mr. Schoomer was elected to the City
Council Mr. Schoomer had told him, and at least once every year since then, that the
number one rule was "No Surprises". Today, for the first time, when Mr. Schoomer
asked him why he needed to be here tonight at the meeting, Mr. Ollendorff told him that
we needed him here for an economic development issue. That wasn't quite true - it was
mostly because he knew that Mr. Schoomer's peers, on the City Council, would want to
talk to him, just like they have just done. He apologized for surprising him. Secondly,
since he is not supposed to engage in any political activity, he would tell Mr. Schoomer
later and privately what a good Councilmember he was.

Mr. Schoomer graciously thanked his colleagues and Mr. Ollendorff for their generous
and heartfelt comments.

ADJOURNMENT:

Mayor Adams announced that the next Council meeting would be on April 22, 2002, at
which point the recent election results would be certified. The meeting was adjourned
at 7:55 p.m. , ~ /q / !

'~Leisha Forsythe, City ~; lerk
