Session 1841
May 15, 2002

these types of mandates by the state. If the citizens would recycle more, then we could
manage the costs much better.

Mr. Munkel asked about the Ramp Deck and Walls budgeted for repairs under 743.09.
He wondered if this was something new we were building. Mr. Ollendorff said that this
was continuing repairs to the transfer station ramp which have been taken place over
the last three or four years. The ramp is basically being rebuilt and this is the last phase
of that.

STREET LIGHTING - 26.70:

Mr. Ollendorff said that we have over 3000 street lights that we rent from AmerenUE
and we have a couple of hundred street lights that the City owns. The biggest cost in
here is $600,000 under electricity, which is the rental charge for all those street lights.
Responding to the Mayor, Mr. Ollendorff replied that the ownership of the lights being
replaced in the Loop hasn't been determined yet. The overhead cobras will probably
remain UE's but the other new ones that we want, UE doesn't offer, so those will be
ours.

Mr. Ollendorff replied that Washington University has agreed with a request, which the
Mayor made a couple of months ago, that they pay us for the new streetlights on the
Greenway walk and will do so this year. They have also agreed to upgrade the Ackert
Walk lights that are over 25 years old. The two projects combined are close to
$250,000.

PARK DEPARTMENT - 35.10:

Mr. Ollendorff reported no major changes. We are continuing with the same excellent
programs and same staff.

On C-57, under 729.11, Mr. Ollendorff noted that we do most of the tree trimming with
our own forestry crew, but we can't do it all. We contract out some tree trimming and
have increased this budget slightly this next year. Mr. Munkel commented that the Ruth
Park cleanup, that Ms. Welsch arranged, was very helpful. Ms. Welsch said that it has
been an excellent project.

Responding to Mr. Wagner, Mr. Ollendorff said that planting trees and bushes was
under 732.01, on page C-57.

GOLF COURSE - 35.20:

Mr. Ollendorff said that we were continuing a high level of maintenance out at the golf
course. Each year we look at fees and we did a quick study this year, as well. We
charge $12 weekdays and $15 weekends for non-residents to play nine holes of golf.

4
