The Greater St. Louis Area Fire Chiefs Association
notified us that Captain Blair Watts, Private Bob McCarthy, Private Rob Herrick, Private
Scott Handlan and Private Kenneth Krieg will receive Class IV Unit Citation Awards for
their quick and professional actions on March 5, 2007 in the rescue of several
occupants from a two story fire at 7600 Fairham Ave.

employee wellness program
Under the umbrella of our new , HR Director Williams will
announce three innovative employee initiatives during your September 24 Council
meeting. Owning a home in U. City just got easier. Eligible City employees will receive
a grant of up to $4,000 towards the purchase of a home in the city’s northeastern
section, defined as north of Olive and east of Midland. Participating employees not only
help stabilize neighborhoods and increase the city’s tax base, they reduce the stress of
commuting to work, save time and fuel, and reduce the carbon imprint on the
environment. University City is collaborating with Freddie Mac, Beyond Housing,
FOCUS St. Louis and area lenders to implement a Workforce Home Benefit initiative.
The program is barely off the ground and Battalion Chief Dave Crismon has already
applied to be the first employee to participate in the program. Congratulations and
welcome to BC Crismon! As you know, fulltime University City employees earn up to
two Wellness Hours each week. During a regular work shift, those two hours can be
used to participate in city-run fitness programs or to volunteer for U. City based
organizations. Healthy employees are more productive. They also help reduce the cost
of medical insurance. Charitable volunteer time can be used at any U. City public or
private school, or nonprofit organization. Employees are using Wellness Hours to read
to local school children and coach athletic programs. Ms. Gatlin from Finance uses her
hours to teach financial literacy to grades 1-12 through Junior Achievement. Employees
are allowed to double their hours to create a four-hour time slot to assist with non-
emergency medical transportation to seniors through the County Older Resident
Program (CORP). Finally, on your September 24 agenda you will be reviewing the
purchase of biodiesel rather than diesel fuel for use in City vehicles and the School
District Bus Fleet. City employees can take advantage of an Alternative Transportation
Program. Alternative modes of transportation help relieve road congestion and reduce
harmful emissions. By foregoing single occupant commuting, employees will also earn
$1/day when they carpool, bike, walk, or take Metro to and from work. A group of
firefighters has found carpooling an easier, less stressful way to work their shift. Walking
to work has become a healthy option for some employees. The program also reduces
stress on regional traffic, and U-City’s parking infrastructure. We have added
designated parking for carpoolers to be LEEDS compliant and designated parking for
customers only. In addition, we have opened up the narrow street between the Trinity
building and City Hall to reduce congestion at the Trinity/ Delmar intersections.

Citizens for Modern Transit
Thursday, Oct. 11, will host a program from 3:00 PM to
6:00 PM followed by a reception at the Missouri History Museum regarding transit
oriented development and building liveable communities in St. Louis with Light Rail. The
future of Metro Link, and how to maximize the Metro Link Investment will be discussed.
The Plenary Speaker is Dianne Legge Kemp, DLK Civic Design.
