Part II. PRODUCT PROPOSAL

Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse Project
?
1.Name of Project/Property: NHL

Predevelopment Projects:

6826 Chamberlain Court
Property Address: X Nat. Listed

University CitySt. Louis
?
City: County: Not Listed

2.Project Type: (check one) X Planning X Outreach ____Predevelopment ____Other

3.Property Condition (Predevelopment Projects):

4.Project Description/Scope of Work:

(Also include Project Benefits for Planning/Outreach Projects):

With this grant application we are requesting funds that will allow us to formalize a
plan for the future of the Sutter-Meyer Farmhouse and also educate people about the
history of this building, and how the families who lived there impacted not only
University City but the greater community.

We plan to do a Strategic and Interpretive Charette with Michael Bouman, the
Executive Director of the Missouri Humanities Council, and other consultants he will
bring into the project. As detailed on the Missouri Humanities Council website
(http://www.mohumanities.org/programs/cultural/charettes.htm), the objective of
this charette will be “to involve people in “thinking outside the box” so that they can
tap new creative energy and adopt practices that spell success.” There is a chance
that the outcome of this charette will be to help focus, slightly change, or redirect the
specific of the vision for the farmhouse reached by the Board of Directors.

In this charette we plan to call upon the professional expertise of our Board member,
Esley Hamilton, who serves as the Historian in the St. Louis County Department of
Parks and Recreation. Mr. Hamilton will assist us in presenting the history of the
building to present to those taking part in the charette, and to work with the group as
it refines its thinking and focus.

Shelley Welsch will offer her services for the marketing and organization of the
charette community event.

Mr. Hamilton will also work with the Board of Directors to document the outcomes of
the charette, so that the Board can finalize a long-term strategic plan for their work.

With funds from this grant we also plan to produce a brochure that will be mailed to
every home and residence in University City (about 16,000 brochures will be mailed.)
On the brochure, we will work with Mr. Hamilton again – on writing and layout, and
with Creda Stewart who has extensive experience in the communications field, and
with Shelley Welsch, who also has extensive experience in writing and production.

This brochure is conceived as an awareness-building piece, the goal of which is to
make more University City residents aware of the existence of this building within the
city, and its history. The focus will be on the history of the farmhouse and the families
who lived there – the Sutters and the Meyers, because we know the long term support
for our project will come from people when they have some real knowledge of the
building we hope to protect.
K-1-c
September 24, 2007
