The Sutter-Meyer Society has made great strides in developing the vision for the
Sutter-Meyer farmhouse; in surveying the condition of the property and developing a
priority list for needed work; and in building support within the community for the
project.

The Sutter-Meyer Society will protect an integral part of University City’s history, and
will be another anchor for economic development activities along the Olive Boulevard
corridor. The support of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources/State Historic
Preservation Office, at this time, will help ensure the success of the SMS as we work to
protect a piece of history in suburban St. Louis County for this and future
generations.

5.Discuss community support for the project and describe how the project furthers local and state

preservation goals. (See the state preservation plan at
http://www.dnr.mo.gov/shpo/preshor2004.pdf)

The founders of the Sutter-Meyer Society first started meeting in September of 2006.
In less than a year, this group has:

?

made a presentation to the City Council of University City, and received city
support for our effort, in the form of a long-term lease of the property, and press
coverage on the city-owned cable channel and in the city-owned publications.
University City has also agreed to be the CLG for this grant, on behalf of the
Sutter-Meyer Society ;
?

invited University City residents to meetings to discuss the future of the Sutter-
Meyer farmhouse. From these meetings a number of people have stepped
forward to become members of the first Board of Directors of the Sutter-Meyer
Society. Residents in the neighborhood immediately surrounding the farmhouse
have been kept advised of our work and have been invited to become more
involved. These efforts have ensured that Sutter-Meyer support base extends
across all ethnic, economic, and city ward lines.
?

developed a membership base of approximately 40 people, and regularly e-mails
SMS information to mailing lists totally about 750 people;
?

kept local media apprised of our work and obtained news coverage in the print
media that focus on the University City area;
?

made presentations to local historical groups – the Historical Society of
University City and the Historical Preservation Commission of the City of
K-1-h
September 24, 2007
