Existing Conditions
The existing bridge and ramp are eight and a half feet wide. The hand rails on the bridge and the
cage design push cyclists to the middle of the pathway, making the experience uncomfortable for
both pedestrians and cyclists. The minimum recommended width of a joint use pedestrian/cycling
bridge in a high mixed-use, urban or suburban context is 12 feet (AASHTO 2012).
- at a slope of 1:12, meeting accessibility
standards. However, this long ramp has no deterrence or design features to reduce the speed of
cyclists. During data collection numerous reports were received regarding the speed of cyclists and
near misses between users because of the confined space.
tƩƚƦƚƭğƌ Ʒƚ ‘źķĻƓ ƷŷĻ tĻķĻƭƷƩźğƓ wğƒƦ Ʒƚ ƷŷĻ CƚƩĻƭƷ tğƩƉ tğƩƉǞğǤ .ƩźķŭĻ tğŭĻ Ѝ
