<br /> <br /> <br /> <br />To: Honorable Mayor Adams and City Council <br /> <br />From: Julie Feier, City Manager <br /> <br />Date: March 14, 2008 <br /> <br />Subject: Weekly Update <br /> <br /> <br />Americans with Disabilities <br />Staff is currently updating its (ADA) compliance materials. <br />Enclosed in Council’s packet are the proposed Grievance Procedures, Grievance Form <br />and Notice of the rights of the disabled and responsibilities of the City to be posted in <br />government buildings in University City, including the Library, Police station, City Hall, <br />Heman Park OCHS Senior Center and Centennial Commons. Any ADA grievance will <br />be reviewed and investigated by our designated ADA Coordinator, Assistant City <br />Manager, Petree Eastman. The procedures, grievance form and notice will be on <br />Council’s consent agenda for the March 24 City Council Meeting. If you have any <br />questions in advance, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Eastman directly. <br /> <br />Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School <br />Good news at : it is getting its entire library <br />updated, with new books (fiction, non-fiction and reference materials), new shelving, <br />comfortable furniture for kids to curl up in to read, and a mural painted on the upper <br />Washington University’s Service First Project <br />walls by students in . Volunteers are <br />also coming forward from U City United and the University Hills Women’s League. This <br />tremendous effort by the District and community will have a dramatic impact on the <br />children in BCJ School and will assist the teachers, staff and administration in reaching <br />their aggressive AYP (Annual Yearly Performance) measures under the No Child Left <br />Behind Act. This effort is truly an attempt by our village to help with improving the <br />academic performance of the students at BCJ. <br /> <br />The School Board held an informal workshop Thursday night where in they discussed <br />air conditioning units <br />putting out bids to provide for all classrooms at the high school. <br />The initial rough estimates of the cost, assuming electrical upgrades (from outlets to the <br />electrical panels) suggest that this measure may cost as much as $250,000. The hope <br />is to have all air conditioners installed by the start of school next year. The estimate for <br />installing central air conditioning in a renovated building is $6 million.
