Session 1890
July 1, 2003

that approves the plans, because of the emergency exit situation at the
soccer building.

Engineers believe the aerator, requested by the Water Polo Association,
is not suitable.

The engineers have found a solution to the pool depth problem.
The shallow end will be more shallower at 33" and the lap lanes, at the
deep end, will be about 54". Prop K's request to deepen the lap lanes was
reported to be not practical by the engineers, because it was cost
prohibitive and a significant engineering constraint. Prop K wished to
keep the pool lip/curb. The engineers suggested building the deck 4"
higher around the pool, sloping away from the pool, so it doesn't become
a trip hazard. This provides 4" of extra pool depth. We want less width at
the shallow end, though, so the engineers will build more flooring here to
meet this request.

Ms. Welsch asked why would we couldn't still keep the gutter design if the deck
is going to be raised four inches. Mr. Ollendorff said that fiberglass is needed to
this and it is a totally different design over gunite. He doesn't know the specific
reasons why. The engineer explained that you could only raise the drain holes
higher in a fiberglass pool. Ms. Welsch asked if we could raise the deck more
than four inches. Mr. Ollendorff said that we could, but it isn't needed. It is just
adding more cost. The engineers strongly advised against the lip/curb idea
because they say it is a trip hazard. Lip/curbs were also wanted originally for
flood protection. But with the built up deck, the deck will actually slope back to
help with water pooling around the pool. Ms. Welsch clarified that it isn't a design
problem then, it just adds more cost if the deck is raised higher. Mr. Ollendorff,
referring to the engineers explanation, stated that if the deck is raised higher, it
makes the slope steeper, which would cause some issues with BOCA. The
engineers say that the costs involved with this are relatively small.

The Mayor called the question of the Council to accept the changes discussed.
Ms. Colquitt moved approval. Mr. Sharpe seconded the motion, which carried
unanimously.

Mayor Adams adjourned the meeting at 2:46 p.m.

Leisha Meine Forsythe
City Clerk

Page 6
