amendment was overwhelmingly approved in the House. However, Rep. St. Onge and Sen.
Stouffer pulled the amendment out of the bill in the Conference Committee report. Please thank
them for supporting our position.

...
CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS AGAINST CITIESRep. Steve Tilley and Senator Jason Crowell
pushed a proposal to allow anyone to file a class action lawsuit challenging the validity of a local
sales tax. This would enable Tom Burcham, a Farmington attorney, to proceed with his lawsuits
claiming that some city sales tax rates are excessive (more than one-half cent for capital
improvements or more than one cent for the general sales tax) and some ordinances were
passed improperly (votes not recorded, records lost, etc.). The Department of Revenue has
always allowed multiple sales taxes and about 50 municipalities have adopted multiple capital
improvement and general sales taxes with voter approval. The proposal would have permitted
class action lawsuits, refunds of taxes collected, and attorney fees. If successful, these lawsuits
would bankrupt many Missouri cities. With help of Representatives Ron Richard, John
Kuessner, Mike Cunningham, and Ward Franz, we blocked efforts in the House, and Senators
Griesheimer, Purgason, and Clemens blocked efforts in the Senate.

...
MISCELLANEOUS NASTY BILLSThe General Assembly failed to pass numerous bills
opposed by the MML including the following: billboard amnesty, prohibition on storm water fees,
requirement for municipalities to provide free water and sewer hook-ups and building
inspections for other political subdivisions, ban on municipal utility deposits, prohibiting
municipalities from banning pit bulls, increased penalties for violating the Sunshine Law,
numerous personnel mandates, numerous caps or reductions in property tax revenues,
numerous sales tax exemptions, a new state tax lid, and a repeal of the Missouri non-partisan

court plan.

And Previously:

Sutter Meyer Society 6826 Chamberlain Ct. will an hold open house and receive the

?

first Century Home Plaque from Historical Society of University City on Sunday,

May 25 from 2pm to 3 pm.
th

Monday, May 26 is the Memorial Day Run.

?th

On Wednesday, May 29 Barbara C.
