Mr. Wagner agreed that larger recycling carts be made available. He asked Ms.
Shields-Benford to check into whether the waxed cartoons are now recyclable. Mr.
Wagner liked the door hanger idea as a way of re-enforcing the single stream idea.
Mr. Price liked the idea of educating the school children who would then encourage the
practice at home too.
Mr. Crow suggested that the single stream recycling educational information be put into
the new citizen welcome package. He also suggested the door knocking campaign be
civic minded with the use of local scouts and done on days when recycling was
scheduled. That way it would be easy to tell which houses they need to go to and which
ones could be skipped.
Mr. Glickert said he felt any campaign program be kept only to U City in specific.
Mr. Price moved the Single Stream Recycling Strategy be adopted with economic
backing to come and was seconded by Mr. Sharpe, Jr. The agreement was unanimous.
Mr. Wagner asked Ms. Shields-Benford to prioritize the educational promotion
strategies to the Council. The budget will have been passed then and it will be clearer
the availability of funding.
CITIZEN COMMENTS
Richard Dockett, 6844 Crest Ave
Mr. Dockett agreed on the importance of recycling and the need to educate people to its
value. He stated that many people need to be educated as to just what single-stream
means and why it is beneficial.
Elsie Glickert, 6712 Etzel
Ms. Glickert felt education was needed in the area of recycling. She noted that there
are only two residents on her block that recycle. Ms. Glickert suggested the use of
bulletin boards in public places to get out the message. She also suggested going back
four months and send out a welcome package with recycling information and free
passes to all who registered for occupancy permits. Ms. Glickert stated that the cart is
very inconvenient to roll out to the front of their houses. She would like to see it picked
up in the alley. Ms. Glickert felt that newspaper advertising would not reach the majority
in University City but door hangers placed by the scouts would be very effective.
Debra Jones, 6720 Bartmer
Ms. Jones suggested that recycling pick-up be free and any trash to be picked up
require bags with purchased stickers. It would encourage citizens to recycle rather than
buying stickers for a trash bags.
J. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
K. NEW BUSINESS
Ms. Ricci stated she and Mr. Wagner have asked the City Clerk to remove all bills
dealing with compensation for City employees. She stated that there was an issue with
this request and Mr. Mulligan expressed an opinion that these bills cannot be removed
