MEMORANDUM <br />DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS <br /> <br />TO:Julie Feier, City Manager <br /> Evelyn Shields-Benford, Director of Public Works <br />FROM: <br />August 5, 2008 <br />DATE: <br />RE: Recycling Public Education Campaign – Recommended Budget <br />Estimated Public Education Program Costs <br />Public Works presented the attached public education campaign proposal to <br />the Council in June 2008. The estimated cost for the recommended city-wide <br />public education campaign is about $43,000. <br />If we only proceed with the door hangers to non-recyclers and develop posters <br />for the bus shelters and metro locations, a total of about $20,000 would be <br />needed with girl scouts’ and/or boy scouts’ assistance. If they are unable to <br />assist, the cost would be higher. <br />The summary of the proposed public education campaign is as follows: <br />Public Education Strategies Estimated Cost <br />Poster printing (schools, bus shelters, <br />metro)$9,600$9,600 <br />Flyer/Brochure for Insert or Mailing 13,930 <br />Door Hanger $9,900$9,900 <br />Special Activities and Events with <br />Schools: $9,100 <br />Total Cost $19,500$42,530 <br />Existing Budget Public Education Program Activities and Costs <br />For FY08, Public Works has budgeted about $5,420 for public education activities. <br />These activities include the annual recycling promotional items re-order, re- <br />printing current brochures, online website updates, promotions and contests, <br />staff participation in community events/meetings, and updates to Channel 10 <br />and the U.
