5City Hall Building – LEED Certification:
.The City Hall building in University City
is the only municipal building in the St. Louis Region that has received LEED
Certification by the U. S. Green Building Council. This honor was achieved in early
2008. LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is awarded
by the U. S. Green Building Council which is a non profit membership organization
whose vision is a sustainable built environment within a generation. Its membership
includes corporations, builders, universities, government agencies, and other non-profit
organizations. Since the U. S. Green Building Council’s founding in 1993, the Council
has grown to more than 13,000 member companies and organizations, a
comprehensive family of LEED green building rating systems, an expansive educational
offering, and a network of 72 local chapters, affiliates, and organizing groups.
University City was able to incorporate several LEED items into the historic renovation
of the building. These items included public transportation access, bicycle storage and
rider changing rooms, ADA compliant transportation parking capacity, storage and
collection of recyclables, building reuse maintaining 100% of existing shell and low
emitting materials for paints, carpets, composite wood.
