process of walking area creeks and the River Des Peres in order to identify structural damage
that may potentially become a larger problem in the future.
In addition, MSD is scheduling crews to clean sanitary and combined sewer pipes in the
areas affected by overland flooding, which occurs when natural areas such as creeks, streams,
flood plains and drainage areas receive too much water. MSD will also be sending crews to the
area to clean storm inlets. When this process is complete we will inspect sewer lines to further
evaluate their condition and to assess any possible effects that the storm may have created.
While we are doing everything within our power to respond to and help residents during
this difficult time, the aftermath of these storms simply outweighs MSD’s ability to assist
residents. MSD is neither a disaster relief agency nor an insurance company. We can only
handle issues related to our sewer system. For this reason, and given the magnitude of the
devastation that has impacted our community, help must come from outside the St. Louis area.
During the week of October 5, the State of Missouri petitioned the federal government
for disaster relief through FEMA. At this point, only FEMA has the resources to bring relief to
the thousands of residents suffering in our community. MSD will continue to do everything
within its power, but we are at our limits. The St. Louis community desperately needs FEMA’s
assistance, and MSD calls upon the federal government to quickly approve the state’s petition.
River Des Peres Ownership & Maintenance Responsibility
In the area around University City, the property on which the River Des Peres exists is
owned by the adjacent property owners. There is no continuous line that can be drawn to
delineate ownership. The exact ownership could be determined by checking the records of all
interested properties.
