<br />To: Honorable Mayor Adams and Council <br />From: Julie Feier, City Manager <br />Date: October 23, 2008 <br />Subject: Weekly Update <br />Flood Update: <br /> Outside of waiting for FEMA’s announcement for disaster assistance, <br />we continue to seek grant funding to assist in recouping City and resident costs incurred <br />by the flood. We are researching funding from the State via special allocations of CDBG <br />funding and applicability of the State Rainey Day Fund, SEMA through annual grant <br />rounds and potentially the Corp of Engineers and Great Rivers Greenway through the <br />enhancement the river corridor and trail systems. We were pursuing funding from <br />MoDot through a STIP trail earmark; unfortunately, it was earmarked for the City of St. <br />Louis. Volunteers continue to support victim’s and we continue to receive calls for <br />assistance and offers for assistance from volunteers. <br />The Missouri Chapter of the American Planning Association will dispense its annual <br />planning awards today recognizing excellence in shaping quality communities across <br />the state. Nominations came from across the state and represented a wide variety of <br />projects, including master plans, redevelopment, and innovative projects as well as <br />many other efforts to advance planning in the State of Missouri. An awards committee <br />selected 10 award winners. Recipients received notification of the awards at the annual <br />City of <br />Missouri State Planning Association conference in Kansas City, Missouri. The <br />University City received the Outstanding Program and Project Award for the work <br />done with ARCTURIS creating the Olive Boulevard Design Guidelines. <br />Congratulations to ARCTURIS and the Community Development Department for this <br />honor. Community Development Director Walker will attend the November 17 Council <br />Meeting to update Council on the guidelines and the award. <br />100 Year Birthday Celebration of the Lions’ Gates: Roaring for 100 Years! <br />Next year will be the 100-year birthday of our famed Lions at the top pylons at the Civic <br />Plaza. The Lions were designed by architects Eames & Young and created by sculptor <br />George Julian Zolnay. The “Gates of Opportunity” were the brainchild of University City’s <br />founder E.G. Lewis and were meant to make the entrance to the residential portion of the <br />Historical Society of University City <br />new city. The initiated a Committee to plan a series <br />of celebratory events in 2009 to mark this important milestone. On September 12, 2009, a <br />Big Birthday Bash is planned for the community in the Civic Plaza. The Committee is co- <br />chaired by Historical Society Board Members Ed Nickels and Petree Eastman. Members <br />include representatives from civic, arts and business community: Dan Martin (Arts & <br />Letters Commission); Jessica Bueler (Loop Special Business District); Marlissa Hudson <br /> <br />
