The Commission is dedicated to
promoting the arts and making art publicly visible and accessible to a broad
and diverse community audience.
Funded primarily by the University City budget, the Commission supports
numerous activities including a much-loved annual photography competition,
a public art Sculpture Series with Washington University, a Returning Artist
program for our school children, a series of free outdoor summer concerts,
Movie Nights in the Park, and public lectures and presentations.
The Commission is made up of 15 appointed University City volunteers who serve four year
terms and may be appointed for two consecutive terms. The Commission meets on the second
Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm at Centennial Commons with staff member, Tom McCarthy.
Ó¿¶±® Ю±¹®¿³ ײ½´«¼»æ
University City Photo Show
Now in its 42nd year, this photography show is open to all amateur
photographers in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Hundreds of
photographs are submitted and the work submitted is judged by a panel
of professional photographers. Juried photographs are selected to be
hung at the Centennial Commons and the top winners receive cash
awards. All entries are considered for inclusion in the calendar
distributed to University City residents.
University City/Washington University
Student Sculpture Project
This partnership with Washington University has provided a breath of
fresh air to the University City community each spring for over 20
years. Washington University sculpture students are encouraged by
their professors to compete for the opportunity to design public art for
temporary construction in University City. Students develop proposals
and models, make personal presentations to the Commission and submit a budget. Selected
students are responsible for constructing and removing their own work. A reception for these
students is held every year at Centennial Commons. Occasionally, the Commission purchases an
outstanding sculpture and permanently installs it.
Returning Artist Program
This program is the Commission’s
primary educational component
designed specifically for school
children.
