annually features artistically renowned graduates of University City High School who return to
share their fields of work. Typically, one artist is invited per school year, and all visiting alumni
artists
have established careers in their fields. Program activities are concentrated at University City
High School in a variety of classes. Some activities take place in middle school and elementary
school classes in both public and non-public schools. There are two goals of the program: to
encourage students to investigate careers in the arts and to enrich the schools’ art programs.
Returning artists have included visual artists, glassblowers, photographers, writers, filmmakers,
graphic designers, videographers, animators, instrumental musicians, composers, actors, singers
and dancers. One important and consistent component of the program is a free exhibit or
presentation open to the public. This event is publicized in newspapers, posters, school notices
and by mailed invitations.
Starlight Concert Series
This program provides a dazzling array of local jazz and blues artists who grace the outdoor
concert stage in Heman Park for eight Monday nights in June, July and August. On these
evenings, between 500 and 1500 citizens come with their blankets and barbeques and listen or
dance to great music under the stars.
Movie in the Park
This past year, the Arts and Letters Commission added a fun and
exciting family program to our calendar of events. The
Commission showed a big screen movie outdoors each month
during the summer at one of the public parks. For free, University
City families sat out under the stars and watched Singing in the
Rainat Mooney Park,Akeelah the Bee at Fogarty Park and Jaws at
the Heman Park Pool. The community response was
overwhelming, and we have booked three more movies for summer
2009.
Art Advisors
Members of the Arts and Letters Commission have a wide array of talents including visual artists,
photographers, writers, sculptors, and musicians. The Commission is available to advise and
work with any community groups to increase our understanding, appreciation and love for the
arts. The Commission is dedicated to making the University City community a vibrant artistic
community.
