To: Honorable Mayor Adams and Council
From: Julie Feier, City Manager
Date: February 20, 2009
Subject: Weekly Update
In collaboration with the Green Practices Committee, the City has produced a
Community Supported Agriculture(CSA)Brochure
to inform residents and promote
the local farms and CSAs in our community. The CSAs that operate around University
City are partnerships between farmers and community members where the CSA
members buy a “share” of the farmer’s crop, enabling farmers to produce a wide variety
of high quality (usually organic) vegetables for a guaranteed market. CSAs support our
local economy while conserving natural resources. The informational brochure will be
available on the City’s website under “Green Practices” and in various City locations.
Census 2010
The is already underway in University City with verifying addresses and
preliminary counts. In the last four decades, the Census has showed on average a 6%
population decline in University City; an accurate count in 2010 could demonstrate that
our community is increasing population, not decreasing. The Census directly impacts us
by:
Determining the amount of sales tax revenue the city receives to provide city
services;
Determining the allocation of funding for roads, building improvements, schools,
nursing homes, and child-care centers in University City;
Determining grant availability for needed social, recreational, housing and
economic development programs;
Attracting businesses and developments that make University City a primary
destination.
With this in mind, we are sending the attached letter to landlords requesting that they
continue to maintain tenants in their rental property, particularly during the census
period (February – April 2010). Anyone in need of assistance marketing their rental
property, please contact the City’s referral program at 505-8516. We also prepared a
informational mailer that will be provided to landlords now and mailed to all residents
just prior to the census. If you have any questions or need further information, please
contact Andrea Riganti, Manager of Long Range Planning, at (314) 505-8516 or
ariganti@ucitymo.org.
