INTRODUCED BY: DATE: February 23, 2009 <br />9025 <br />BILL NO.: ORDINANCE NO.: <br />AN ORDINANCE IMPOSING AN ADDITIONAL ONE-FOURTH OF <br />ONE PERCENT SALES TAX ON ALL RETAIL SALES MADE IN <br />THE CITY OF UNIVERSITY CITY WHICH ARE SUBJECT TO <br />TAXATION UNDER CHAPTER 144 RSMO, FOR ECONOMIC <br />DEVELOPMENT PURPOSES, AND PROVIDING FOR THE <br />SUBMISSION OF A PROPOSITION AUTHORIZING SUCH TAX <br />TO THE QUALIFIED VOTERS OF THE CITY OF UNIVERSITY <br />CITY AT AN ELECTION ON AUGUST 4, 2009. <br />WHEREAS, by Ordinance No. 6634 the City Council imposed a sales tax at the <br />rate of one-fourth of one percent on all retail sales made in the City of University City, <br />Missouri (the “City”) which are subject to taxation under Chapter 144 RSMo, for <br />economic development purposes, pursuant to Section 67.1305 RSMo; and <br />WHEREAS, the sales tax was approved by a majority of the votes at an election <br />held in the City on August 8, 2006; and <br />WHEREAS, Section 67.1305 RSMo permits the City to impose a sales tax of up <br />to one-half of one percent for economic development purposes, subject to voter approval; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the City desires to impose an additional one-fourth of one percent <br />sales tax for said purposes, for a total of one-half of one percent. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF UNIVERSITY CITY, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS: <br />Section 1. An additional one-fourth of one percent sales tax is hereby <br />imposed on all retail sales made in the City of University City, Missouri, which are <br />subject to taxation under Chapter 144 RSMo, for economic development purposes. This <br />tax shall be in addition to any and all other taxes allowed by law, including but not <br />limited to the one-fourth of one percent sales tax approved by the qualified voters of <br />University City for said purposes on or about August 8, 2006. <br />Section 2. An election is hereby called and ordered to be held in the City of <br />University City, Missouri on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, for the purpose of submitting to <br />the qualified voters of said City the following proposition: <br /> <br />
