Mr. Wagner asked to have his Prop U comments be recorded. “To frame
Prop U in this Resolution as between those who seek quality education in
U City and those that don’t is, of course ludicrous. We all on this Council
want an outstanding, successful School District in our City. That’s one of
the fundamental priorities of any municipal government. But the belief that
to have an exceptional, highly regarded School District requires new
school buildings is unsupported by data and history. There are cities in St.
Louis County that are acknowledged as top notch School Districts that
haven’t resorted to a spending spree for new buildings. On the other
hand, there are School Districts in Missouri that have spent millions on
new buildings that have been unaccredited. There is, undeniably, a weak
correlation between new buildings and educational excellence, and to
frame Prop U as the only path to quality education in U.City defies
credulity.”
Mr. Crow supported Prop U. He felt that in the fifteen years he lived in
University City, this was the first time the school district held community
engagement process meetings in which they asked for every one’s
opinions. The final process concluded with four goals: improve student
achievement, improve facilities strengthen finances and improve family
and community involvement. Mr. Crow said the Prop U is not just about
buildings but also is concerned with student achievement. He feels it is
time to make an appropriate investment in your children, your future and
your community.
Mr. Sharpe supported Prop U as he supports anything that is proven to be
beneficial for the children. He stated that the only thing constant in this life
is change and if we are not in the changing mode as far as our children
are concern then we are losing the race.
Mayor Adams support Prop U and supports education with a good
environment.
Mr. Crow seconded Mr. Price’s motion and was approved by the majority
with two Nay votes from Mr. Wagner and Mr. Glickert.
COUNCIL COMMENTS
Mr. Glickert asked the school district representatives present to have a school
representative sit with the Council next year.
Joyce Pumm,
City Clerk
