He stated that he understands one of the neighbor- <br />ing communities had a problem wherein it could not take care of its <br />children and most of these children are negroes~ and the University City <br />school system opened their doors and have taken these children into the <br />University City schools. As far as the City's public facilities are <br />concerned, Councilman Lahrmann explained, there is no discrimination <br />against anyone provided he lives in University City. He said it was as <br />far back as April, 1951, that the Park Commission set up in their rules <br />and regulations a provision that all of the facilities of the Park De- <br />partment were at the disposal of University City taxpayers. <br /> <br /> Mr. Joseph F. Reedy, 6996 %obbins, Pagedale was tlc next speaker. !te stated <br />he owns property in University City and has also done some construction work <br /> in this City (he said he is a builder). Mr. Reedy submitted arguments <br /> against Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />At 9~35 o'clock P.M. Mayor Kaufman announced a recess and at 9:42 o'clock <br />P.l~l. the meeting reconvened. <br /> <br />Mr. Reedy continued his presentation and he offered further objections to <br />the proposal. <br /> <br />Upon inquiry by the Mayor, there appeared to be no other persons who de- <br />sired to be heard on the subject of Bill No. 5788 for the first time and <br />Mayor Kauf~nan stated that anyone who wished to be heard for the second <br />time (who has spoken heretofore) would now have an opportunity. <br /> <br />1,ir. I,Iax Colodesch, 7408 Gannon Avenue, asked to be recognized, which request <br />was granted. Mr. Colodesch stated he is speaking for himself individually. <br />He spoke against Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />The next speaker was Mr. William Flori, 7622a Virginia, St. Louis, who <br />stated that he represents the St. Louis Tavern Operators. Mr. Flori spoke <br />against integration of eating and drinking establishraents. <br /> <br />Mrs. Roy Greenbaum, 701 Yale Avenue, upon being recognized, spoke in behalf <br />of Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />l~r. Robert Sorensen, 6640 Kingsbury, asked to be recognized, which request <br />was granted. Mr. Sorensen stated that he is appearing on behalf of the <br />business men of University City that are opposed to Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Upon inquiry by Mayor Kaufman, the City Clerk replied that letters, together <br />with copies of Bill No. 5788~ had been transmitted to Mrs. Marybelle <br />Gardiner~ manager of the Chamber of Conm~erce, and to Mr. Ray Krueger, <br />president of the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Sorensen suggested that possibly <br />insufficient publicity was given to Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Councilman Stake quoted an excerpt from the minutes of the Council meeting <br />of January 18, 1960, concerning an expression by Mr. Sorensen, and asked <br />Mr. Sorensen whether the minutes properly reflect his statement. Mr. <br />Sorensen replied affimatively. <br /> <br /> <br />
