Dr. Weinhaus urged the Council to adopt Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />TLe next speaker was Mr. George Frazier, 6901 Etzel Avenue. Mr. Frazier <br />spoke in opposition to integration. <br /> <br />Reverend Allen Hackett~ 6315 Pershing Avenue, of the Pilgrim Congregational <br />Church, asked to be recognized~ which request was granted. Reverend Hackett <br />stated that he recently returned from a trip around the world. He spoke in <br />favor of Bill No. 5788 and based his support of the proposal on the theory <br />that :'the eyes of the world are on the United States." <br /> <br />Next to be recognized was ~lr. Clarence Wirtz~ 7809 Trenton Avenue. Mr. <br />Wirtz strongly opposed Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Reverend Ned Cole, Dean of Christ Church Cathedral of St. Louis asked to <br />be recognized, which request was granted. He said they have a Church in <br />University City and that he had been requested to appear before the Council <br />this evening by the Bishop of the Diocese. He urged the passage of the <br />bill as proposed. <br /> <br />At this juncture, Mayor Kau~aan stated that as a matter of record, he had <br />a letter directed to the Missouri Commission on Human Rights for the purpose <br />of ascertaining how many cities in the State of Missouri have a Human Re- <br />lations Co~nission. According to the information he has, the Mayor said~ <br />the State of Missouri has a Human Relations Commission in St. Louis, St. <br />Joseph: Kmnsas City and Jefferson City -- two more are in process of cre- <br />ating such commissions or are discussing same: Columbia and Springfield. <br />This information is a matter of public information~ Mayor Kaufman said. <br /> <br />I.ir. 2obert E. Stege, 1094 Pennsylvania, was next to address the Council <br />and i4r. Stege spoke against Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />~rs. Marilyn Goodman, 1077 Jackson Avenue, upon being recognized, urged the <br />Council to adopt Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Councilman Stake, at this point~ stated that he would be interested in hear- <br />ing from Councilman Baris whether it was his intention to include barber <br />slops and beauty parlors in Lis proposed amendments to the DEFINITION <br />section of Bill No. 5788. Councilman Baris answered that the bill is not <br />up for final adoption, but as is done in every case by members of the <br />Council, he will submit his suggested revisions to the Council. He said <br />that specifically with reference to beauty shops and barber shops, it is <br />his belief that all places of public accormodation should be prohibited <br />from discriminating and Le would so include beauty shops and barber shops <br />as well as restaurants, hotels, etc. <br /> <br />14iss Sherry Galanis, 7127 Pershing, a student, upon being recognized, spoke <br />against discrimination and favored passage of Bill No. 5788. <br /> <br />Dr. James A. Butler, 7001 Horthmoor, was next to address the Council and <br />he expressed the view that there is no need for the proposed ordinance~ <br /> <br />Mr. Fred Webbe, 6319 Clemens Avenue, upon being recognized, stressed the <br />fact that Bill No. 5788, if adopted, will result in depreciated property <br />values. <br /> <br />Hiss Sandy Feigenbaum, 1085 North and South Road, a student, asked to be <br /> <br /> <br />
