Werner, 7116 Westmorelam, expressed C01"lCenl about the recent School District decision to ch.an:Je the school mascot from an Irrlian to a lion. He felt the decision was amitrary am said he was not aware it had been re- quested by Native Americans. He asked if the School Board could legally do this, and if there was anything he could do to stop it. Mayor Majerus said the Council has no power over the School Board except as interested private citizens. She suggested he approach the School Board am present his case. Mr. Schoomer said this matter has been discussed by the School Board am ad- ministration for more than two years, and a decision was reached to make this change, one he concurred with. He felt using an Irrlian as a mascot cast a derogatory note on part of the population. Mr. Werner felt it was a symbol of honor to be chosen, invoking pride and a sense of unity in the School Dis- trict. He said he will attend the next School Board meeting.
