Werner, 7116 Westmorelam, expressed C01"lCenl about the recent <br />School District decision to ch.an:Je the school mascot from an Irrlian to a lion. <br />He felt the decision was amitrary am said he was not aware it had been re- <br />quested by Native Americans. He asked if the School Board could legally do <br />this, and if there was anything he could do to stop it. Mayor Majerus said <br />the Council has no power over the School Board except as interested private <br />citizens. She suggested he approach the School Board am present his case. <br />Mr. Schoomer said this matter has been discussed by the School Board am ad- <br />ministration for more than two years, and a decision was reached to make this <br />change, one he concurred with. He felt using an Irrlian as a mascot cast a <br />derogatory note on part of the population. Mr. Werner felt it was a symbol <br />of honor to be chosen, invoking pride and a sense of unity in the School Dis- <br />trict. NAYS: None.
