Louis Real Estate BoaI:d that are in Bills 8020, 8021, am 8022. She said <br />the Connnission regards segregated housin;J as a serious mral issue am feels <br />these bills will seJ:Ve only to further segregate the northeast area of Uni- <br />versity city, many blocks of which have not had white buyers for up to thirty <br />years. '!he Connnission believes homes in this area are not shown to white <br />buyers am it feels the six mnth trial period in the bills should instead be <br />used to address these problems with action am a finn conunitment. <br /> <br />Ms. Joan Botwinick, 511 westview Drive, said she IroVed into University City <br />because she thought it was an integrated cc:mm.mi.ty; however, she discovered <br />there were no black families livin;J close to her. She felt the real estate <br />conpanies bear some responsibility for University City not bein;J mre inte- <br />grated, am the public needs more knowledge about what is actually goin;J on. <br />She was concerned about telephone solicitation, am said people are already <br />bothered by too many calls. An 18-nxmth trial period wherein real estate <br />companies are challenged to help open up the community would be a desirable <br />goal, am an iInpartial research organization could mnitor their activities, <br />she said. In response to Mrs. Schuman, Ms. Botwinick said the Institute for <br />Policy Leadership at the University of Missouri could mnitor the proPOSed <br />changes, am Washin3ton University has some iInpartial research groups. She <br />said she look into it further. <br /> <br />Mr. Walter stradal, Executive Vice President of the Real Estate BoaI:d, said <br />he came before Council 23 years ago when the City passOO its current real es- <br />tate o:rdinances. He said the BoaI:d approached the Mayor about two years ago, <br />indicatin;J that the City's real estate position had changed am was a great <br />success. '!he BoaI:d felt the City owed a level playin;J field to its residents <br />am to the real estate community, am it asked that the o:rdinances, especial- <br />ly those relating to solicitation, be amerxied. He met with Mayor Majerus am <br />Councilmeniber Schoomer am said the discussions were frank, open am honest. <br />
