The first of six ecological conversations at the Missouri Botanical Gardens kicks
off April 23 with Dr. May Berenbaum.
Dr. Berenbaum is the head of the Department
of Entomology at the University of Illinois and the United State’s leading expert on
“Colony Collapse Disorder,” Berenbaum has testified before Congress on the potential
disruption of the world’s food network because of the mysterious and rapid decline in
honeybees. Without honeybees, the natural pollination of flowering plants and food is
derailed, threatening entire crops and what is available in our grocery stores. Bees are
to thank for putting one-third of everything we eat on our tables. For humans, they are
the most important pollinators on Earth. In the U.S. alone, they pollinate 130 crops a
year and their services are worth $15 billion. There is nothing dry or academic about
Berenbaum’s approach to explaining the impact of the insect world to our lives. Tickets
are only $5 for garden members. There will be two opportunities to hear her speak, one
at 2:00 PM and one at 7:00 PM. For more information on the series go to the Garden’s
website at http://www.mobot.org/150/global_garden/default.asp
Sidewalks needing repair for trip hazards or serious deterioration receive temporary
asphalt or minor concrete repairs with in-house staff. Major asphalt and concrete
repairs are performed each year by contract. Some minor and major curb and sidewalk
repairs are required each year to keep the infrastructure in fair condition. If the City did
not make progress in these areas each year, we would not be even minimally
maintaining the infrastructure. When the street is micro surfaced or rehabilitated,
necessary curb work should be performed to keep the pavement in good condition as
long as possible, since improper/poor drainage can cause damage to the new street
pavement. In addition, performing the curb and sidewalk repair prior to the actual work
on the street pavement, ensures that the large equipment necessary to make sidewalk
The pavement surface
and curb repairs do not damage a newly paved surface.
evaluation and rating system is attached for your consideration.
