skating in the African American communities in St. Louis and East St. Louis. The
Showcase eliminated the young students’ screening this year due to space and
administrative limitations, so it is of particular significance that their film was accepted.
The students’ piece, “Battle of the Sexes,” was created during after-school Broadcast
Club sessions the second semester of the 2008-2009 school year. It is part of a larger
documentary that students will complete in a Broadcast Journalism course, which is
being offered for the first time at UCHS during the 2009-2010 school year. Mary
Williams and Curtis Stuart are sponsors of the Broadcast Club and Curtis Stuart will be
teaching the course. A grant for equipment and an instructor, Webster University
CALOP (Commission for Access and Local
Professor Kathy Corley, was provided by
Original Programming)
of University City. Mary Williams serves as the University City
School District liaison to CALOP. Hybrie Brownlee and Jarohn Johnson directed “Battle
of the Sexes”, which features UCHS’s macho men and feline fashionistas in a spoof of
TV wrestling matches. It includes UCHS wrestlers Justin Nicks, and state qualifiers
DeMarco Kemp and Chris Vaughn. Rounding out the cast are UCHS students Maya
Foster, Aubrion Taylor, and Arriana Moore. Tickets for film programs at the Tivoli are
$10 each; $8 for students with valid and current photo ID and for Cinema St. Louis
members with valid membership cards.
