To: Honorable Mayor Adams and Council
From: Julie Feier, City Manager
Date: August 14, 2009
Subject: Weekly Update
With the failure of the .25% sales tax increase initiative last week, we must begin again
$1.2 million budget deficit
a serious conversation about how the City will face the in
FY 2011. The September study session is scheduled for follow up discussion on the
sales tax. We will provide a summary of the information previously provided during
budget discussions and add any additions for revenue generation or expenditure
reductions received by September 14 for the agenda. Council may also want to amend
the budget this fall to incorporate the $20,000 for legal review of the AT&T Settlement
and the $80,000 for the proposed State Audit. You may want to bring your calendars to
st
the August 31 meeting in order to schedule “Town Hall Meetings” on the budget or
special study sessions.
flood buyout
An update on the went out to Wilson residents this week. The application
has moved passed SEMA review and is now in the hands of FEMA. The Corp study is
progressing a summary of their status and is attached along with information on the
flood plain maps. FEMA will not pay for seeding or any of the landscaping planned for
the project. They will allow the land to be leveled as part of the demolition process and
left bare. If there were any environmental contamination of any material other than
asbestos inside the house (i.e. an old fuel storage tank) it would be the City’s
responsibility to pay for the removal. Staff is continuing to meet with Great Rivers
Greenway to develop a partnership for the site.
The City and Loop Special Business District have joined to help a group of local
Green Teens
teenagers start an organization called “”. These teenagers came to the
City complaining about the excessive amount of litter in the Loop. The teens, Abbey
th
Robinson, Rachel Hyland (8 graders at Our Lady of Lourdes) and Amelia Schoenbeck
(a senior at Villa Duchene) quickly came up with a proposal to help business owners
begin taking responsibility for the litter in front of their businesses by helping them out.
th
The Morley sisters (Merinda-9 grade UCSD and Kerstin at Brittany Woods) have
joined the team. The Loop Green Teens made a presentation to the LSBD this past
week and will be asking other teen volunteers to be a part of this grass roots effort.
Teens interested in being a Green Teen, should contact the group at
greenteens.loop@gmail.com or Petree Eastman at 505-8535 or peastman@ucitymo.org
or Elaine Alexander , volunteer coordinator for the UC School District at ealexander@u-
city.k12.mo.us The Green Teens’ first official event will be held in conjunction with
