To: Honorable Mayor Adams and Council
From: Julie Feier, City Manager
Date: September 25, 2009
Subject: Weekly Update
Sgt. Michael
As we are all acutely aware, it has almost been a year since the death of
King.
We will be erecting a flagpole and memorial plaque in honor of all public servants
on City Hall grounds at the corner of Sgt. Mike King Drive and Delmar Blvd. There will
be a 10:00 AM memorial ceremony at the flagpole on Saturday, October 31 to honor the
four families, which have lost loved ones in the line of duty. The School District is also
working on a memorial garden in honor of Sgt. King.
In addition, this weekend, Kirkwood’s St. Michael’s Day Dash will honor our fallen
officer, Sergeant Michael King and fallen Maplewood Firefighter, Ryan Hummert. Team
UCPD-Walkers for 302
“” has been created for those wishing to participate or provide
monetary support of Mike King and his family. Please select our team when you
register! To register you may go to the website http://kirkwood5k.com or download the
attached registration form.**If you experience problems with the website just hit
“refresh” a couple of times and the contents should appear** The proceeds from the 5k
walk/run will benefit BackStoppers. We hope to have a great show of support for Mike’s
family (who will be walking that day). A memorial ceremony will start in the Station
Plaza in Kirkwood on Saturday at 7:30 AM; the race will begin at 8:00 AM.
At the last Council meeting, Council member Crow asked if the Pension Board had
dividing employee pension funds between more than one investment
investigated
managing firm
. Staff reported that the Board had this item on their next agenda.
Since 1997, the pension trust funds of both the Non-Uniformed and the Police and Fire
retirement plans have been invested with Fiduciary Asset Management (FAMCO), a
subsidiary of Piper Jaffray Investment Management Inc. In 2007, the Board approved
12% of total assets to be invested in an international fund outside of FAMCO. The
Board has established a split of 60% equities and 40% fixed income as a policy for
FAMCO. The value of funds invested as of June 30, 2009 was the following.
Non-Uniformed $12,613,755
Police & Fire $19,192,310
will honor more
On October 18, the Greater St. Louis Area Fire Chiefs Association
than 20 University City firefighters
for their heroic efforts in three separate events.
