City Clerk Pumm has confirmed that she handled the postings in accordance <br />with the Sunshine Law. <br />th <br />24 Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration <br />The University City High School’s <br />will take place at the High School’s Auditorium on Sunday, Jan. 17, 3:00 – 5:00 PM. <br />Community volunteer Nicole Adawale will receive the University City Board of <br />Education’s 2010 MLK Spirit Award during the celebration, “Fulfilling Dr. King’s Dream”. <br />The event will kick-off at 3:00 PM with a symbolic march from Jackson Park Elementary <br />School. In case of inclement weather, the celebration will be rescheduled for Sunday, <br />January 24. For more details visit the District’s websitehttp://ucityschools.org orcall <br />Carol Ann Cole at 290-4019 or ccole@u-city.k12.mo.us. <br />AmerenUE rate case <br />As you know, University City is one of the parties to the . <br />AmerenUE is proposing an 18% increase in its rates, which if approved by the Public <br />Service Commission (PSC) would have a devastating effect on the City’s budget. The <br />City is opposing the rate increase but also the underlying rates for AmerenUE-owned <br />street lighting. Staff discovered that the energy costs associated with our streets lights <br />are a very small percentage of the total rate we now pay. Cities that own the <br />streetlights (that are of the same type-pole and fixture) pay a fraction of the rate that our <br />City pays. AmerenUE claims that the additional part of the rate is to cover maintenance <br />and the cost of the pole/fixture, but has been unable to provide any documentation to <br />prove their case. If the City were only charged at the same rate as those cities that <br />own their polls, we could save nearly $500,000 per year. Staff would encourage <br />Council and citizens to make their concerns about AmerenUE grossly overcharging <br />cities for non-peak hour street lighting that bears no resemblance to the cost of energy <br />or maintenance.
