RESOLUTION <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Center of Contemporary Arts (main campus), Craft Alliance, the Saint <br />Louis Symphony Community Music School (main campus) and Washington University <br />(School of Art's Lewis Center and Academy Buildings) contribute in countless ways to the <br />energy, diversity, and sense of community in the Loop area of University City; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, these arts district institutions contribute to the University City economy <br />tlarough direct spending on goods, services and labor, and by drawing significant audiences <br />to their facilities and to area businesses; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, University City is home to a significant number of artists, writers, <br />musicians, and arts participants; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, local, regional and national foundations are seeking qualified grantees <br />with innovative approaches to arts education and collaboration such as is proposed for the arts <br />district; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, innovative state tax incentive programs could encourage mixed use and <br />arts focused development in the area, and strategically place ourselves in a positive position <br />for favorable tax incentives; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, opportunities exist for signage and other improvements within the district; <br /> <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, art and sculpture will highlight the area as an arts district and will benefit <br />University City by increasing recognition of the entire area and thereby bring even greater <br />numbers of people to the arts district and the Loop. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council of <br /> University City is hereby authorized to proclaim the existence of the Loop Arts District.* <br /> <br /> ADOPTED this (7~ day of~~'q~ , 1998 <br /> <br />'~S~lerk~~ <br /> <br />* (see attached boundary designations and mission statement for the arts district) <br /> <br /> <br />
