To: Honorable Mayor Adams and Council
From: Julie Feier, City Manager
Date: March 26, 2010
Subject: Weekly Update
implemented the Licensing Module of the new
The Finance Department has
software
this week, and all new business licenses and renewals will be processed
through the new system. Other licenses such as liquor licenses, truck permits and dog
tags will be added as time allows. The business-licensing module will allow better
tracking of businesses, accuracy with renewals, improved reporting and inquiry ability.
Finance can now automate many of the processes related to delinquency follow-up.
Congratulations and thank you to Interim Community Development Director
Andrea Riganti for receiving accolades from St. Louis County for her work on the
2010 Census!
She has been working on the Census for over a year to get the
message out on how the City is financially impacted by the Census. Since much of our
revenue is population dependent due to the distribution of the County sales tax pool, we
could lose as much as $500,000 annually if the present trend of 6% population loss
continues. Therefore, it is important that every citizen be counted!
In addition, Census data is the official count of everyone living in University City. The
data is used to help determine funding for community services (Community
Development Block Grant funds, sales tax pool), schools, grants, and other federal
programs. The information is confidential. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an
individual’s response with anyone, including the IRS, INS or the police.
The City has many partners in the effort:
Mayor and City Council
Community leaders/neighborhood associations
Schools (UC and local universities – Washington University, Fontbonne, Forest
Park etc.)
Senior living facilities (Gatesworth, Brentmoor, etc.)
Business Associations (LSBD, Olive Link, Delmar@170, Chinese Chamber of
Commerce)
Focus on large multi-family complexes (Villages of Wyncrest, Washington
University
