MINUTES of the CALOP BOARD MEETING, FEBRUARY 1, 2007
The meeting convened at 6:15 p.m. at the CALOP office, 630 Trinity. In attendance were: Ed Nickels, Eric Friedman,
Eleanor Mullin, Karol Walters, Dennis Riggs, Jim Kirchherr; arriving at 6:30 p.m. were Gladys Creer and Mae Etta
Weston, and at 7:00 p.m. Cameron Sanders.
The meeting was devoted to discussing and scoring the thirteen grant applications, distributed at the last meeting.
To start, Ed moved that we not consider Digital City ReMix part 2, as Mr. Guzzardo has a pending project, and our
rules state you cannot receive another grant while one project is pending. Eleanor seconded, approved by
acclamation.
It should be noted that: Marla Roach was absent, but sent in her score sheet, and Karol Walters had to leave at 6:45
p.m. but left score sheet; Gladys Creer abstained from voting on some of the early projects, and that Cameron was
not there for the discussion of the first few projects.
There is some confusion as to how much money we have to allocate this round; information will be provided at the
next meeting. Eleanor stated that we should keep in mind we do not have to distribute all available moneys if we do
not think projects merit it.
Following is a recap of the discussion of each subject. Cameron has the scoring totals.
1. Wehrenberg 100 Years: general interest in this as good local and historical interest. Big question is if they have
the cooperation of Wehrenberg to access information.
2. A Sewer Runs Through It: Dennis disclosed that the principals work for him, and are skilled, reliable film makers.
Much interest in the local aspect of this project.
3. A.O.R. St.STL: Dennis knows the principals, and says they are good. Big question as to whether they have rights
to the music. Also, is this an aspect of musical history that is specific to the St. Louis area, and will it only have
appeal for a very narrow audience. There is a question as to why they need so much money.
4. Untitled: This project seems to be asking to package a one woman show. We do not think this is our mission.
Ms. Richardson applied a few years ago with a similar request.
5. Digital City Remix 2--Eliminated.
6. Old St Ferdinand Shrine: principals involved are experienced, and have received grants previously. This is
probably a worthy project with local interest, though not specific to U City. Question as to why the Shrine is not
helping fund this.
.
7Stem Cell Drive: Big question as to whether this topic is too political to suit our mission, and whether they can
really come up with a balanced view. Also, this topic has and will be heavily covered by current event media.
They have been filming interviews for two years with no end in sight.
8. Different Way of Life: Mr. Jaimes is known to several members as a good film maker. There is a concern that he is
trying to cover too much--if he really examines Five alternate life-style groups in a 30 minutes film, that's not much
time for any of them. Also, there is no local tie--most groups focused on are out-state. However, in general we found
the topic of interest
9 Something About Webster: the main concern is, why should U. City fund this. Charter gives money to Webster
Groves also; she should apply to Webster for funding. Also, this subject--what the city and people are like now in
follow up to '16 in Webster Groves' seems to have been covered professionally with updates on the original film.
Perhaps she can be 'led' into a film of U.C. and Webster's importance as 'inner ring suburbs'.
10. Peck of Dirt: initially, excitement because we don't get many entries that are cultural--a play--. However, most
strongly disliked the premise of 'mean alcoholic men', and the script provided did not improve the general opinion. In
addition, Jim was not sure they had the technical means/knowledge to do this.
11. Hunger and Hope: basically, we felt this was too expensive ($71,000 for a 30 minute film), and while a worthwhile
