Minutes of the CALOP Commission Meeting
May 10, 2007

The meeting, which was held in the Second Floor Conference Room of City Hall, was called to
order at 6:15 p.m. by Ed Nickels, Acting Chairman. In attendance were commission members
Ed Nickels, Eric Friedman, Jim Kirchherr, Dennis Riggs, Marla Roche, Mae Etta Weston, and
Bob Wilcox. Also present were Janet K. Watson, Deputy City Manager of University City, and
Genise Lay, University City staff liaison.

The minutes of the April 12, 2007 meeting were reviewed. A motion to approve the minutes was
made by Mr. Wilcox, seconded by Mr. Kirchherr, and approved.

Mr. Nickels introduced Genise Lay, University City staff liaison. Mr. Nickels asked that
commission members verify their contact information so that Ms. Lay could update and
distribute the contact list.

Mr. Nickels gave a status report of the Oral History project. A vendor has been obtained to film
the project and letters to interviewees have gone out. Concerns regarding the project should be
addressed to Shelley Welsch.

Mr. Nickels described the Liaison program in which the CALOP Chairman will assign voting
members of CALOP as liaisons to film projects. He also reported that grant contracts had been
signed and that five grantees received their initial installment payments, with one payment left to
go out. Mr. Nickels distributed financial and project status reports to the commission members.

Project Updates

1. Searching for Dred Scott - Waiting for final.
2. CALOP Funding the Future - The project has been rescinded; funds for this project will
go back.
3. Elijah Parish Lovejoy Society - This project has been re-titled “African American
Lawyers”. Mr. Riggs reported that he had not been able to contact the grantee and the
project status is unknown. It was determined that the grantee should appear before the
commission and provide an explanation of the status of the project before another
payment is released.
4. Mississippi Ironclads - Editing has slowed on the project, but it may be completed in
three months. According to the grantee, the A-roll was given to Cameron Sanders,
former executive director of CALOP. Mr. Riggs reported that according to Mr. Sanders
the project was delivered. Mr. Nickels will contact Mr. Sanders to find out where the
completed project is. Payment will be held until the project is located.
5. Portrait of Edward Dowling SJ - Final filming will take place during the fall. There was no
file located for this project.
6. Digital City Remix - The film was well done and artistic, however there may be some
copyright infringement issues. The film will be reviewed before running.
7. Sutter Meyer House - Final filming will take place at the next archeological dig at the
Sutter Meyer house.
8. After Lewis & Clark - James Scott submitted an invoice for the first and second payment
installments, but there is no signed contract on file. A contract has been forwarded to
James Scott for signing.
9. Monument in Skip Berger’s Garage – David McCahan would like to have
plaques/monuments placed in University City parks and plans to end the film showing
placement of the plaques.
1
