Minutes of the CALOP Commission Meeting
nd
University City City Hall, 2 Floor Conference Room
July 12, 2007, 6:00 P.M.

The meeting convened at 6:11 p.m. in the Conference Room, Second Floor of City Hall.
In attendance were Ed Nickels, Eleanor Mullin, Gladys Creer, Mae Etta Weston, Jim
Kirchherr, Eric Friedman, Robert Wilcox, Dennis Riggs, Shelley Welsch, Genise Lay
and Rebecca Rivas.

The commission set aside regular matters to hear from Shelley Welsch and Rebecca
Rivas.

Oral History Project Review
Shelley Welsch gave a status report on the Oral History project. Ms. Welsch explained
that residents were being contacted to give first person interviews about their
experiences in University City. Ms. Welsch reported that four interviews had taken
place, 21 were scheduled, and additional interviewees were being sought. Ms. Welsh
noted that Tony West was filming the interviews and that the interviewees would be
asked the same first five questions and then the interview would continue based on the
interviewee’s background. She also informed CALOP that she planned to use only
$10,500 of the funds allocated for the project and suggested that the commission
decide how to use the footage (i.e. archive, verbatim, subject transcript).

The commission discussed various ways to archive/document the footage from the
project. There was also discussion about why the project was established and its
objective. It was noted that the project was established as a result of concerns
expressed that the Centennial film did not include sufficient footage of African American
and Jewish contributions, and that the goal of the project was to provide archival

material about University City history and integration.

Knock, Knock America Project Review
Rebecca Rivas presented a video excerpt and gave a status report on the film Knock,
Knock America to the commission. Ms. Rivas reported that the film was close to
completion. She explained that the film follows teenage refugees as they participate in a
performing arts production while focusing on the life experiences of three refugees. Ms.
Rivas noted that Roosevelt High School was not portrayed very well with respect to one
of the refugees. Ms. Rivas stated that she met with and showed the footage to
Roosevelt’s principal and public relations official. Ms. Rivas requested an interview, but
Roosevelt officials did not comment. Mr. Friedman suggested contacting Rick Sullivan
and Diana Bourisaw.

Ann Davis Grant Proposal Review
Ann Davis was not present to speak with the commission.

1
