<br />Minutes of the CALOP Meeting <br />nd <br />University City City Hall, 2 Floor Conference Room <br />Thursday, February 28, 2008, 6:00 P.M. <br /> <br /> <br />Commission members present: Ed Nickels, Mae Etta Weston, Eric Friedman, Bob Wilcox, <br />Gladys Creer, Marla Roach, Karol Walters, Dennis Riggs, and City Councilmember L. Michael <br />Glickert. Commission members absent: Eleanor Mullin. Also present: Genise Lay, Leah <br />Gantz, and Bruce Marren. <br /> <br />Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order by Mr. Nickels at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room, <br />Second Floor of City Hall. <br /> <br />Reading and Approval of Minutes <br />The commission reviewed the January 24, 2008 minutes. A motion to approve the minutes <br />was made by Mr. Wilcox, seconded by Ms. Weston, and approved. <br /> <br />Grant Round Update <br />Mr. Nickels reported that the grant round had started and applications were due on March 3. <br />Ms. Lay will compile applications and distribute to commission members. Ms. Roach <br />reported that she had received calls about the grant round due to the announcement airing <br />on Channel 18. She explained that some callers expressed difficulty in completing the <br />budget section of the application. Mr. Nickels will review the budget. Ms. Roach also <br />reported that she spoke about CALOP grants at a film festival conducted at Harris Stowe. <br />Ms. Roach asked if an individual can submit a grant application to fund a film festival. Mr. <br />Nickels explained that requests can be made for funding events but are not considered <br />during grant rounds; the commission may approach funding events separately. <br /> <br />Vacancy/Nomination <br />Mr. Nickels announced that a vacancy existed on the commission due to the resignation of <br />Jim Kirchherr. Mr. Nickels informed the commission that he talked with Jim Reeves, an <br />attorney who is also a resident of University City and participant of St. Louis Volunteer <br />Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts (VLAA), about serving on the commission. Mr. Nickels <br />recommended Mr. Reeves for the nomination and also asked commission members to <br />submit any additional recommendations. <br /> <br />The commission set aside its regular business to hear from Leah Gantz and Bruce Marren on <br />the progress of the film Old St. Ferdinand Shrine. <br /> <br />Leah Gantz, Old St. Ferdinand Shrine <br />Ms. Gantz presented a trailer of Shrine of Old St. Ferdinand highlighting clips from rough <br />cuts and explained the premise of the film. Ms. Gantz discussed her plans to contact an <br />archivist for material and purchase royalty free music. Ms. Gantz also noted that she <br />planned to complete the film by the end of May and enter the film in the St. Louis Film <br />Festival. Mr. Riggs will work with Ms. Gantz regarding film festival entry. <br /> <br />Archival Project <br />Mr. Nickels reported that there was space available in the basement of the University City <br />Library which CALOP could utilize to store films. Mr. Nickels asked that a member of the <br />commission serve as coordinator to help relocate and record CALOP film inventory. Mr. <br />Nickels also explained that he would seek the assistance of Sue Racoff, Historical Society <br />archivist. Ms. Creer and Ms. Walters volunteered to assist with the archival project; Mr. <br />Nickels and Mr. Riggs will provide assistance as well. During this discussion, Mr. Nickels <br />1 <br /> <br />
