The commission interrupted its business to formally welcome Robert Bernstein to the commission. <br />Robert is a University City resident and a musician (drummer). He is replacing Mary Schumann, who is <br />resigning after long service to University City in several capacities. Robert thanked the commission; he <br />regards it as “an honor to serve and to live in University City.” <br /> <br />th <br />Photo Show: Jane Brownstone gave an update on the 37 annual photo show. The judges this year will <br />thth <br />be Stan Strembicki, Kathleen Sanker, and Jay Framm. Entries will be accepted on March 25 and 26. <br />th <br />Entries will be judged on March 29. The Photo Show mailer has been delivered and follow up calls to <br />schools have been made. Commerce Bank has expressed an interest in showing some of the photos this <br />year. <br /> <br />Jay Framm, photo show judge, has also been selected to take the photographs for the 2006 (centennial) <br />calendar. The commission will formulate an objective, ask for and approve a plan. Photographs to be <br />included in the calendar need to be selected by September 2005. The cost of retaining a photographer has <br />been approved by the city. <br /> <br />th <br />Sculpture Series: The reception will be held in City Hall, in council chambers, on Sunday April 10 at 2 <br />p.m. As a courtesy, the artist and Traci Roberts presented the Lion Sculpture to the Commission for <br />Historic Preservation. Liability questions were discussed. Funding of a commemorative book needs to be <br />addressed. <br /> <br />Returning Artist: Calla Smorodin reported. This year’s Returning Artist(s) program was a great success. <br />Rave reviews continue to come in. The photographer alumni, Dan Dreyfus, Dirk Fletcher, Matt Gainor, <br />Suzy Gorman, and Wiley Price, were wonderful. The program received a grant that enabled the purchase <br />of digital cameras by the city; the cameras will be stored at the high school for future use (which we hope <br />they receive!) Tony Taylor is interested in integrating photography into the schools’ art curriculum. Next <br />year, the commission hopes to invite a single artist again. <br /> <br />Old Business: Traci Moore-Clay read a letter from the city manager suggesting guidelines for the <br />purchase of art by the commission for the city. <br /> <br />Jo Seltzer reviewed funding, logistical, and staffing issues that arose during last year’s first Art Speaks art <br />show. The commission’s continuing participation in Art Speaks will be discussed at the April meeting. <br /> <br />The secretary, Kate Stein, reported that, thanks to assistance from Francine, a third venue had been <br />recruited for the Reading Series. Call for Submissions Flyers will be distributed. Calla again offers <br />assistance. <br /> <br />Cheryl Thompson reported that Velvet has agreed to give the first concert in the annual summer concert <br />series held in Heman Park. Commisioners with band recommendations should send them to Cheryl. <br /> <br />New Business: No new business was brought before the commission. <br /> <br />After a motion duly made and seconded, the meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m. <br />
