June 6, 2005

University Commission for Arts and Letters
May Monthly Meeting Minutes

Date of Meeting: May 10, 2005

Attendees: Jane Brownstone
Leland Barber
Jean Markus
Calla Smorodin
Jo Seltzer
Lisa Mandel
Traci Moore-Clay
Kate Stein
Phyllis Weber
Jo Anne Zach
Cheryl Thompson (Staff Liaison)

Excused: Diane Davenport
Robert Bernstein
Francine Brungardt (Council Liaison)

Visitor: Barbara Romero

Traci Moore-Clay called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.

The April minutes were accepted as amended.

Treasurer’s report: Jean Markus gave the report, which was accepted as submitted.

Readings: Kate Stein indicated that, because of a lack of commission and community
interest, the Loop readings scheduled for May had been cancelled. The commission is
engaged in many other events in the spring. Many commissioners originally involved
have retired or resigned from the commission. Proprietors of the Loop venues were
notified, as were individuals who submitted their work for consideration. Tracy Moore-
Clay indicated that she thought the commission should host a “Letters” event, and that
the readings were a sound idea. She suggested recruiting, during the summer, a new
commission committee to organize an event, tentatively slated for Fall.

Calendar: Dr. Jane Brownstone reported on the 2006 “centennial” calendar, which will
be shot by Jay Framm, a professional photographer. Jane met with Jay to give him
direction on both the calendar themes and specifics of production; the calendar should
represent the diversity and vitality of University City and be of keepsake quality. He will
take the photos and the commission will give him feedback and make the final selection.
The calendar is usually mailed in late November or early December.
