University Commission for Arts and Letters
May Monthly Meeting Minutes

Date of Meeting: June 14, 2005

Attendees: Jane Brownstone
Leland Barber
Robert Bernstein
Calla Smorodin
Kate Stein
Cheryl Thompson (Staff Liaison)

Excused: Jean Markus
Francine Brungardt (Council Liaison)
Phyllis Weber
Jo Anne Zach
Lisa Mandel
Traci Moore-Clay
Jo Seltzer

Visitor: Mayor Joe Adams

In the absence of Traci Moore-Clay, Jane Brownstone called the meeting to order at 7:09
p.m.

Before proceeding to a discussion of the evening’s agenda, Mayor Adams was invited to
address the commission on the subject of the Centennial Celebration Committee (CCC,
hereafter). He does so, offering highlights of the CCC’s progress thus far.

Mayor Adams reports that the president of the Historical Preservation Commission has
offered his assistance to A&L; he would be happy to write copy for the centennial
calendar. The CCC is considering a “lion project,” which would involve decoration and
citywide display of lions, to be judged by A&L and auctioned off. In recent years,
Chicago displayed cows and Los Angeles angels. The CCC is in the process of
budgeting and will soon proceed to fund-raising. The CCC has suggested a special
centennial category be added to next year’s photo competition and show.

Mayor Adams further requests that a member of the Arts & Letters Commission be
designated to attend all future meetings of the CCC. Jane volunteers and is so
designated. All are welcome to attend.

The Mayor is thanked for attending the meeting.

The May minutes were accepted as amended.
