University City Commission on Arts and Letters Minutes January 10, 2006 Attendees: Calla Smorodin Jane Brownstone Lisa Mandel Emily Kelly Barbara Santoro Leland Barber Robert Bernstein Traci Moore-Clay Phyllis Weber Joanne Zach Staff Liaison: Cheryl Thompson City Council Liaison: Francine Brungardt Calla Smorodin, president, called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. Approval of Minutes: Unavailable Treasurers Report: Approved. City Council Report : Land on Millbrook, in Ames Place, is having ownership issues. They are fighting over who gets to sell the land, Ames Place vs. University City. There used to be street car tracks that ran through this space. It is being worked out between the two groups. The city is still working on hiring a city manager. It is a national search and they are th waiting for more resumes. Frank will retire by July 15 and the council is hoping to make the transition during the summer. They would like the new hire to be decided by March with the current city council in place. Returning Artist: Calla Smorodin and Leland Barber met with the school district. The final changes have been made to the schedule. Volunteers will be needed to help at the high school. The volunteers will need to introduce Tony West. Carol Ann Cole is sending out the newsletter. Tracy is finishing the post cards and posters. The post cards will be rd sent out January 23. There may some media coverage. Sculpture Series: Lisa Mandel and Robert Bernstein give a report. The students will stst present their ideas before the commission on January 31 and February 1. The commission will examine each students ideas and presentation and will deliberate on who will be chosen for the 2006 Sculpture Series. The commission will provide food for the students and members.
