University City Commission on Arts and Letters Minutes May 9, 2006 Attendees: Calla Smorodin Jane Brownstone Lisa Mandel Emily Kelly Barbara Santoro Leland Barber Robert Bernstein Traci Moore-Clay Phyllis Weber Joanne Zach Staff Liaison: Cheryl Thompson City Council Liaison: Stefany Brot Calla Smorodin, president, called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Approval of Minutes: Unavailable Treasurers Report: No report was given. City Council Report : Stefany Brot was introduced to the Council. The budget for the city consists of 11% from property taxes. The Library and Police are included in our budget. The council is trying to find more money. A proposal for an increase in the sales tax will be placed on the ballot in August. It will benefit long term economic development. More middle class housing is wanted on Olive Blvd with retail space on the street level. Concerts: The position of the bandstand and audience seating is changing for the 2006 season. Commissioners decided which concerts they were willing to work. There are prizes left from previous donations and will be used for the concerts. There were 15 total prizes left that will be divided up among the concerts. Each commissioner is responsible to bring in a prize to contribute to the concerts. Bob Winters is working on the posters and will be done soon. The Gold Member Sponsors are the only people listed on the posters and flyers. There will be concessions this year. Ron Aiken will be responsible for the concession table this summer. RAC Calendar: We receive a grant from RAC every year and must update the online calendar with our events as part of the grant. Emily Kelly will be the new calendar organizer.
