University City Commission On Arts and Letters Minutes October 10,2006 Attendees: Calla Smorodin Marilyn Cathcart Lisa Mandel Emily Kelly Barbara Santoro Leland Barber Phyllis Weber Joanne Zach Lisa Greening Sarah McCormick Robert Bernstein Staff Liaison: Meredith Schwartz standing in for Cheryl Thompson City Council Liaison: Stefany Brot Calla Smorodin, president, called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Binders: Binders were handed out to the commissioners to organize materials. The binders include calendars, programs, memos, and bylaws. Introductions: New and old members were introduced to the group. Approval of Minutes: Minutes for September were approved as amended. Barbara Santoro made the first motion and Leland Barber made the second motion. Treasurers Report: The Arts & Letters Commission receives money through the budget of the City of University City. We raise our own money by selling raffle tickets at the summer concerts, entry fees for the Photoshow, grants (RAC), donations, selling calendars and selling the prints of photographs from the calendars. A few years ago the Commission threw a reception and demonstration at Third Degree which raised some money. There is also a list of donors that are called if more money is needed. th Concerts: The new dates for the 2007 Summer Concert Series are June 11 – August th 20. City Council Report : Susan Carter, a Jackson Park Elementary School teacher was honored with a $25,000 gift for excellence in teaching. Mr. Milken honored her with the check. Delmar Harvard Elementary School had a singer perform at the school. The tree ordinance has almost passed. The forester has the ability to survey the city trees.
