Lisa seconded the
motion.
Calla Smorodin read a thank you letter from Bethel Elementary School for including them in last year’
Returning Artist program.

Sculpture Series – Julie Bianchi

Tom McCarthyreported that he spoke with our new contact in Washington University’s sculpture department
(Eric _________) regarding the next student sculpture presentation. There may be as many as 10 artists, but all
will present on one night. Calla Smorodin will call Wash U to discuss the expectations that the Art School has
of their students’ work for the sculpture series. She will also inform them of the 100 Year Anniversary of the
Lions Gates.

Photo Show – Chairperson - Barbara Santoro
Application for photographers is completed, but not yet posted on the website.
Judges and volunteers are being solicited.
Marilyn Cathcart has updated contact information for all U City schools.

Starlight Concert – Co-chairs, Tom McCarthy & Kim Chilton
Bringing in new artists was a success. Tom McCarthy will begin booking bands in November for next summer.
Also discussed was the possibility of booking student bands from U City as opening acts.

Old Business
Lions Gate 100 Year Anniversary – Dan Martin & Tom McCarthy
Dan and Tom attended the U City Historical Society’s 100 Year Anniversary planning meeting as Commission
representatives. The Historical Society proposes a “kick-off” celebration only for the Spring of 2009, with a
display of finished work scheduled for Spring of 2010. The Commission will assist with artist selections and
has made suggestions to the Historical Society for fund-raising to purchase the unfinished fiberglass lions.
Ideas for funding include; the Regional Arts Council and the Gateway Arts Council. RAC has very limited
funds for the project but has ideas to raise money and facilitate the work, including RFP’s, sketches with fees
and stipends. Other cities have done this, we can follow their lead. The finished fiberglass lions would be
auctioned with a goal of erecting a monument at the Delmar / 170 intersection.

Commissioners expressed serious concern that the Lions Gate project does not have a well-specified plan for
carrying out its funding and implementation.

Calendar photos –Tom McMarthy
The calendar will be outsourced this year for production. The theme is recycling. Adelia and Regina and others
will review children’s artwork made from recycled items to be photographed for the calendar.

New Business
No new business.
Adjourned 8:50 p.m.
Call for Adjournment by Adelia Parker Castro

Calla Smorodin seconded the motion
Respectfully submitted,
Regina Raineri
