September Minutes <br />were approved. <br />Additions to Minutes: Page 1, caterer’s name corrected to read “Kelly Martin.” Page 1, “October ½” changed to <br />st <br />“October 1.” Page 2, “Dinner meeting” changed to read “Sculpture Meeting.” <br />Treasurer’s Report: Dan Martin reported that including some pending (uncashed) checks, $12,567 in the <br />commission’s checking account. <br />City Councilmember’s Report: Arthur Sharpe Jr. reported that the City Council was working on ongoing questions <br />regarding the budget. The U City IT and HR departments have been dissolved. Privatization of trash pickup was <br />being discussed. In addition to the 1 million dollars earmarked by the U City, Fema will be giving 3 million dollars <br />toward the buyout of the Wilson Street floodplain homes. <br />Staff Liaison report: Tom McCarthy reported that the plaque for the dancer sculptures has been made. On <br />rd <br />October 23 at 8:30 a.m., the Commons will be the staging place for U City’s “Make a Difference Day.” Projects <br />will include removing honeysuckle overgrowth, sprucing up 3 houses, improving the flower beds at the High <br />School. The event will be advertized by non-profit food banks, sign boards and local newspapers. <br />Sculpture Series: Marilyn Cathcart announced that the Sculpture Series judging would take place at 5:45 on <br />rd <br />Tuesday November 3 at the Community Center. Tom McCarthy reported that a meeting had taken place with <br />the Wash U student artists. Most of the 15 students presented 3 design ideas. He also reported there had been <br />negative comments from the residents near the Adams Park location of one of last year’s Sculpture Series <br />installations because of the impediment the sculpture put on their children’s playing area. City maintenance <br />workers also expressed concern about possibly damaging any sculpture around which they had to mow. After <br />Marilyn Cathcart gave a rundown of the Sculpture Series format for the new Commissioners, discussion ensued <br />concerning whether the Commission should continue paying additional money to the sculpture students for <br />artwork it decides to keep permanently installed and various ways of rewarding them for their work. Barbara <br />Santoro requested that Commissioners email Marilyn Cathcart (after February 2011) with their suggested <br />approaches/solutions to this topic for next year’s Sculpture Series. <br />Returning Artist: Diane Davenport and Adelia Parker-Castro announced that there will be 3 artists returning <br />during the week of February 7th—two choreographers, James Smith and Jamale Graves and one musician, Peter <br />Martin. The school sessions will be exclusively documented by video. U City High School Graphics Art teacher, Mr. <br />Yancy, will provide PR for the Returning Artists. Tom McCarthy suggested holding the reception at the High <br />School. <br />Photo Show: Barbara Romero reported that the Kay woods and Nancy Bridges will serve as judges. Photographic <br />th <br />entries will continue to be accepted up to the 17 of October. The show reception will be held at the Commons <br />th <br />on October 24 at 2:00 p.m. Tom McCarthy agreed to replace the luaun for the display easels. <br />Starlight Concert Series: Tom McCarthy reported that any bands desiring to play for the series should quickly send <br />in their press releases and CD’s because many bands will be competing for the coveted performance slots. <br />Festival U. City: Claire Medol-Hyman and Melcine Henderson reported that next year’s Festival would be more <br /> <br />
