Pag. 2 Traffic Agenda December, 2004

Golf Course and Alanson

The intersection Alanson and Golf Course Drive was discussed by the traffic commission on
May 14, 2003. From May 2000 to May 2003, there were 4 accidents at the intersection due to
drivers failing to obey the existing yield signs. At the May, 2003 meeting, the commissioners
recommended to install a supplemental plaques (on the existing yield signs posts) displaying
“cross traffic does not stop”. There are no reported accidents at the intersection Alanson and
Golf Course drive since May 2003 to present.

This intersection was an agenda item for the October 13, 2004 traffic Commission meeting and
at that time, the commissioners recommended to prepare traffic counts for both roads (Golf
Course and Alanson).

The Engineering Division performed the counts and the results were the following:

Average Daily traffic for Golf Course Drive = 156
Average Daily traffic for Alanson Drive = 201

These are very low counts for residential streets. The average on a residential street is up to
3000 cars daily.

The Engineering Division recommends to deny the request. At the same time, it is advisable to
ask the Police Department to record the speeds along Alanson (from Old Bonhomme to Golf
Course).

3.Stop sign for the intersection Berick and Stanford

Stop signs are not used for speed control, they are necessary to indicate street with the right of
way. There are no stop signs at this intersection; however next to Stanford-Berick there are stop
signs on both Stanford-McKnight and Gannon-Berick.

Stopping frequently at intersections can create problems for traffic flow, is irritating to motorists,
and causes vehicles to use more fuel which is expensive and in detrimental to the environment.
Stop signs should be used where they are clearly needed.

There have been no accidents reported at this intersection during the last 3 years, according to
the Police Department records. The traffic on Stanford and Berick at this intersection is low
(Stanford is a cul-de-sac) and about the same for both streets. Since this is a residential area the
speed limit is low and intersections around are not signalized. The view at the intersection is not
restricted.

There are no warrants for this request; therefore, it is the recommendation of the Engineering
Division to deny it.

Thank you.

Cc: Shelley Welsch, Council Liaison
Evelyn Shields-Benford, Director of Public Works
Lee Payne, Police Chief
Lehman Walker, Director of Planning Department
2
V:\WP51\Mariela-Projects\Traffic Commission\agenda\2004\Agenda 12-8-04.doc
