Page 2
Traffic Meeting Minutes
September 8, 2004
__________________________________________________________________________

3.Pedestrian and Vehicular Safety on Delmar Blvd. between Old Bonhomme and

North & South Blvd.

Susan Schafers made the following point that the pedestrian crosswalk at Center Drive puts
the pedestrians in jeopardy since there was not a logical reason for it to be there. (no
school, no business, etc.)Shesaid it gives pedestrians a false sense of security being in the

crosswalk, and expecting the motorists to stop, in spite of the pedestrian crosswalk signs.
Tobias Gibson suggested that it should either be removed or better marked, perhaps by a
blinking yellow light. Susan Schafers said that since the street is so wide, it was difficult to
see the pedestrian crosswalk signs. The idea was discussed of removing the Center Drive
crosswalk altogether. Shelley Welsch suggested that the synagogues be contacted to get
their opinion on removing it before we recommend it to St. Louis County. Shelley also
mentioned that the synagogue attendees can’t use a button or infrared activated lighted
crosswalk either, which was pointed out at the recent town hall meeting at Agudas
Synagogue. The Commission agreed to first contact the synagogues to obtain their
feedback before recommending the removal of the crosswalk to the County. Susan
Schafers was not in favor of reducing the speed limit on Delmar to 30 MPH. She said it
would not be appropriate since motorists won’t travel at that speed and since it is a four
lane major road. She said motorists will travel closer to 30 MPH for a couple of days
during police enforcement, but after that ends, the motorists will be traveling around 42
MPH again.

4.Approval of the minutes from the July 14, 2004 meeting

The Traffic Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the minutes.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m.

Minutes prepared by Tim Moffitt, Deputy Director for Engineering
V:\WP51\Mariela-Projects\Traffic Commission\minutes\2004\Minutes 9-08-04.doc
