MINUTES OF THE TRAFFIC COMMISSION MEETING ON April 13, 2005 2.Left Turns Prohibited from Pershing Blvd onto Alta Dena Ct. This request was submitted by Christopher and Kara Erker, residents at 370 Alta Dena Court. They would like to prohibit left turns from Pershing onto Alta Dena during designated times (between 4am and 10am). They want to deter commuters heading toward Clayton business offices from using Alta Dena Ct. and University Dr. as a cut-through to avoid the stoplight at Pershing-Hanley intersection. They believe that the change requested would increase traffic safety, reduce the number of unsafe turns onto Alta Dena and would reduce the number of commuters driving too fast through the neighborhood. Michael Friedlander, resident at 364 Alta Dena Ct. and former trustee of the Alta Dena Subdivision was present. He expressed that residents have not noted a large number of cars coming up Alta Dena and then turning west on University Drive to access the Clayton business area. He said that commuters do access University Drive by using Jackson Ave. He also noted that entering Hanley from University Drive or Westmoreland would require a left turn across the north-bound traffic on Hanley which is a very unsafe procedure. He suggested that left turns from University Drive onto Hanley Road be prohibited during designated hours. Mariela read the other 3 comments received from residents affected. Two of them are against the request and one is in favor. Mariela also read the letter that St. Louis County sent regarding the signal at Hanley-Pershing. The directional movements of the traffic and the times for each movement can change depending on the number of vehicles and pedestrians calls placed upon the controller. Also, the signal is set to move the maximum amount of traffic in a progression from one end of a system to the other. Traffic entering the system from side streets (like Pershing onto Hanley) will experience longer delays. The directional flow of traffic varies depending on the time of day and the traffic volumes using the roadways. The commissioners voted unanimously that left turns from University Drive onto Hanley Road be prohibited Monday thru Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. 4.Approval of the minutes from the January 12, 2005 meeting (minutes sent in the February package) The Traffic Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the minutes.
