Michael King, Police Department
Robert Wagner, Council Liaison

Notes:
?
Eric Husman was introduced as Public Works representative/Secretary for the traffic

commission.
?
Ms. Schafers stated that she will no longer be part of the commission since she is moving

out of the City of University City.

AGENDA ITEMS:

1.Parking congestion on Jackson Avenue and Dartmouth Avenue

Chief Adams requested consideration for prohibiting parking on Jackson, south of the intersection
with Dartmouth Avenue. He stated that parking should be restricted to allow access for larger
vehicles such as fire trucks.

Mariela Tapia stated that parking is prohibited on Jackson Avenue, around the island from
Dartmouth Ave. to Balson Ave by recommendation of the traffic commission in their meeting on
October 11, 2000.

Councilmember Wagner stated in the year 2000, the parking prohibition was limited to the area
between Balson and Dartmouth because a delegation of students from University City High School
complained about the lack of parking spaces and requested an area for them to park. The
neighborhood is full of resident’s cars parked on the streets. The school has one parking lot and it
is full with faculty personnel.

Dartmouth and Tulane used to be private streets but they are not anymore and public parking is
allowed. Commissioner Halpert recommended that the students be informed about the available
areas to park.

Commissioners discussed the possibility of building a bigger parking lot but they are not sure if
there is available land to build it. Councilmember Wagner suggested that the playground area be
reduced. He recommended that the new City Manager contact the new Superintendent of Schools
regarding the parking issue. A map with the available areas to park should be presented.
V:\WP51\Mariela-Projects\Traffic Commission\minutes\2006\Minutes 7-12-06.doc
