Session 1752
April 12, 1999

Ms. Colquitt, Liaison to the Pension Boards and CALOP, said that a meeting had not been
held yet - they will meet on the 26th.

Mr. Lieberman, L~aison to the Park Commission, reported that at the last meeting March
23% the Memorial Day Run was discussed, at length. Evidently some of Park
Commissioners have been contacted by several residents concerned about the cancellation
of the Run and requested that the Park Commission find a way to reinstate the Run. It
would have been ".he 25th year of the Run, the Silver Anniversary. Linda Ballard reported
that the City Chik:'ren's Center might be interested in running the affair, if they could find
the funds to under~vrite the costs. Someone was to contact Frank Ollendorff about the
possibility of fund:; for t-shirts. The recreation subcommittee is still studying the extent of
recreation activity for all the children in U. City, no report is, as yet, ready to be issued.
Soccer Parties, a r~ew policy just established, are a way for a group to use the recreation
center with fees arid regulations included. A contract is now being drawn up. It will be
instituted for a trial period for the balance of this year, until December. The Ackert Park
dolphin project is awaiting drawings. Flynn Park is now included in the Summer
Playground Program, besides previous statements from the school district. The
Commission approved the annual request for the U. City Tennis Club to use the Heman
Park courts. At the April 27th meeting, there will be a public hearing on the matter of
replacing the tennis courts at Fogerty, or supplementing them with basketball courts and
goals. Because of the proximity to a residential neighborhood and to Barbara Jordan
School, they will b,; receiving notices about the public hearing. Dr. Beckwith is supposed
to send a representative. The Commission seems pleased that the Majerus Park
pond will be stocked with fish and are satisfied with the reason why the non-resident fee
was increased at the golf course. Minor maintenance issues at various parks seem to be
the main concern, and individual commissioners are assigned to various parks, so they can
keep track of them. The daycare licensing issue was brought to the City's attention by the
Missouri Department of Health. The City Attorney has been involved and has drafted a
letter explaining wl'y the Park Department and school programs do not fall in the category
that requires state (:ertification and licensing. The state exempts the Summer Playground
Program, but the after school program is still in jeopardy and the state is taking the matter
under advisement.

Mr. Schoomer, Liai.,~on to the Arts and Letters Commission, reported that they hosted the
second annual Lool: Bicycle Race yesterday. Yesterday, was AI Goldman's speech on the
history of University City Planning at the Library for the University City Historical Society. It
was well attended - a video tape will probably be available. Yesterday there was a
reception for the exhibitors in the Public Art Competition by the college students, which are
now on display throdghout the City. The previous week was the opening of the U. City
Photo Show and they are being displayed over at the Library.

9
