Mayor <br />Kaufman explained that it was obviously for the best possible service; he <br />said there had at one time been a discussion in connection with the possible <br />closing of Fire house #2 and he had made the suggestion that perhaps it would <br />be a wise thing to get a study made as has been done in the past. <br />Mayor Kaufman concluded the public hearing at 10:20 P.M. and called for a <br />brief recess. He stated that at subsequent meetings this subject will be <br />dealt with again and on behalf of the Council he expressed appreciation for <br />the views that were expressed. He said the Council will await some written <br />commentaries from the speakers. The Council reconvened at 10:35 P.M. <br />BIDS - 14 NEW AUTONOBILES : <br />City Manager Ellman reviewed bid proposals which had been received for the <br />furnishing of 14 new automobiles. He said that all Chevrolet, Ford and <br />Dodge dealers in the metropolitan area (Missouri only) were contacted; <br />eighteen dealers expressed a desire to bid and invitations were mailed to <br />all of them. However, only three replies were received, of which two were <br />good bids. The third was an offer to sell new vehicles with no allowance <br />made for trade-ins. Bids were requested for two options: OPTION I - 110" <br />to 112" Wheelbase, and OPTION II - 116' to 118" Wheelbase. <br />The administrative forces recommend,:d that Darts be purchased for the Fire <br />Marshal and the Disaster and Planning Operations officer. To strengthen the <br />inspection services of the Fire Department, it is recommended that one of <br />the trade-in units be retained. This vehicle would be used by the Fire <br />Chief and the Assistant Fire Chief and would also be used as a back-up unit <br />for the Fire Marshal. A 1972 Dodge Polara, for which a $300.00 allowance <br />was made, is recommended for this service. The City Manager said that the <br />administrative forces recommend the bid submitted by King Dodge, Inc. be <br />accepted with the exceptions previously set forth; cost to the City will be <br />as follows: <br />2 Dodge Darts @ $ 4,120.20 = $ 8,240.40 <br />12 Dodge Coronets @ $ 4,458.25 = $53,499.00 <br />$61,739.40 <br />Less Allowance for 13 vehicles $20,700.00 <br />Net Cost $41,039.40 <br />There was discussion. Mr. Theodore Kostedt of the Central Garage, together <br />with City Manager Ellman,answered numerous questions posed by members of the <br />Council. 'Ir. Kostedt said he would be glad to follow up on :shy :,i;evrolet <br />dealers failed to bid (after they had indicated they were going to do so) <br />and also why it is that the City of St. Louis Police Department purchases <br />Novas. Ile added that the bids were written in such a manner that the <br />Chevrolet dealers could bid right along with the others. <br />Councilman Werner moved that <br />be approved and that contract <br />set forth above. Motion was <br />carried. <br />the recommendation of the administrative forces <br />be awarded to King Dodge, Inc. on the basis <br />seconded by Councilman Adams and unanimously <br />Councilman Weissenburger said he would like a follow-up on this and a report <br />within the next few months as to why the Chevrolet people don't want to bid. <br />
