Page 12
Session 1244, Minutes
May 12, 1980
Mr. Sabol asked about the establishment of an energy commission in University
City, as suggested in a recent letter to the Council. Mayor Mooney said the city
already has an extensive program in energy conservation, and hedoesnot see the
need for such a commission here. Mr. 011endorff concurred, noting that if any of
the Council felt there were good reasons for establishing siich a commission, they
should contact him, delineating the reasons for doing so and benefits to the City
over what is now being done.
Mr. Sabol_asked about the possibility of a recyclin ;.rograv, in University City,
and.Mr. 011endorff said the idea was under study at pr-2sent,
Mr. Lieberman said the City has a serious problem, in that St. Louis County is
supposed to cut the grass on property it owns in various areas of. University City,
and it is not doing so. St. Louis County has said it is not going to cut the grass
because of a lack of funds.. Councilmember Lieberman said he would like for the
administration to take some action immediately to try -to get this problem correct-
ed. He said the Council will do whatever it can to get the County to honor its
responsibility for maintaining its property. A particularly bad area is the mid-
way on Midland Avenue from Vernon to Olive Street. Mr. Lieberman said one of the
conditions for turning over the street to the County was that the County maintain
the road and the adjoining midway.
Councilmember Metcalfe concurred completely, noting that there were other areas
in University City which the County owns and is not maintaining properly. She
said she was also willing to do whatever is needed to get the County to take re-
sponsibility and felt a coordinated effort would be most effective.
Councilmember Thompson inquired why University City does not regain the streets
and be responsible for maintaining them. Councilmember Lieberman said some of
the streets which are used mainly by County people should be maintained by the
County, and that University City pays a large amount of taxes to St. Louis County
and should get some of that money back in maintenance of County arterial roads in
University City.
ADJOURNMENT
Councilmember Metcalfe moved that the meeting be adjourned. Councilmember Sabol
seconded the motion, which carried unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at
9:10 P.M.
Dolores A. Miller
City Clerk
